Leadership Transition
General Dynamics has announced that its current president, Danny Deep, will become the next chief executive officer, effective January 1, 2027. He succeeds Phebe Novakovic, who has led the aerospace and defense company as CEO since 2013. Novakovic will transition to the role of executive chairman.
As reported by GovCon Wire, the leadership transition aims to maintain the company's strategic direction. Novakovic expressed strong confidence in Deep's operational experience and leadership capabilities, noting that she looks forward to continuing their work together in her new role as executive chairman.
Deep's 25-Year Tenure
Deep has spent 25 years at General Dynamics, holding multiple leadership roles across the company's business units. Before being named president in December 2025, he served as executive vice president of global operations and executive vice president of combat systems.
His previous experience also includes serving as president and chief operating officer of General Dynamics Land Systems. Deep was elected to the company's board of directors in August 2026.
Additional Executive Appointments and Financial Outlook
The upcoming CEO transition coincides with other executive changes at the company. Nick Barnaby, who was appointed senior vice president and general counsel in July 2026, will officially assume his new duties on the same day Deep takes over as CEO. Additionally, Dana Maisano was named controller and chief accounting officer during Deep's promotion to president in late 2025.
This leadership handoff comes amid strong financial performance for the defense contractor. In the second quarter, General Dynamics reported generating $14.1 billion in revenue and maintained a total backlog of $136.5 billion.
